Art Galleries in the West Village

Published 03/11/2014

New York has long made a name for itself as America’s premier destination for fine art, between its standout museums and its ever-growing population of galleries.

One neighborhood that’s made itself known as a haven for art is Manhattan’s West Village, where art has proven itself to be less of a luxury than a lifestyle. With galleries nearly everywhere you turn in this desirable neighborhood, it’s no wonder artists have flocked to the area for fifty years. Here are some great art galleries in the West Village, all located within close proximity to the luxury lofts at The Printing House.

Stray Kat Gallery: Nestled in the shadow of the High Line, this light-drenched gallery is home to some of the most eclectic art you’ll see in the area. From Asian-inspired woodcuts to oversized canvases, this gallery is a little slice of rock-and-roll.

Mr. Brainwash Presents Icons: Immortalized in Banksy’s Exit Through the Gift Shop, French-born Mr. Brainwash’s pop culture-obsessed style, which often uses copyrighted materials, has made him an icon in his own right.

Leo Kesting Gallery: This cozy gallery has made a name for itself with its exuberant and plentiful openings, where guests are invited to come for the work, and stay for the wine. Just make sure you arrive early — this West Village gem is regularly packed to the brim.

Westbeth Gallery: This haven for artistic expression is one of the city’s most unique galleries, thanks not only to its mix of multimedia and traditional fine art, but its location as well. Nestled in the center of the Westbeth Artists’ Housing, one of the last affordable live/work spaces for artists in the city, this gallery prides itself on supporting all facets of an artistic life.

White Columns: One of the area’s well-known galleries, White Columns is a huge supporter of emerging artists. While the gallery usually has just a few artists on display at a time, they lend heavy support to art scene newcomers through their artist registry, which displays new work digitally.

For anyone with artistic sensibilities, the West Village is not to be missed. Even if you don’t have a destination in mind, be sure to venture outside your West Village loft or condo, as there are dozens of galleries throughout this gorgeous neighborhood.
